The Loose family history marches on…and it is interesting. I’ve found the ship manifest containing our G-G-Grandfather, Franz Reinhold Loose and his family (The Ehlerts), from Rotterdam to Liverpool, and on to Canada. We need to get to the root of the name. Is it “Loose”, “Lohse”, or “Loos”, or “Lose”. In Iceland it is “Lauss”. The minister of foreign affairs for Denmark’s name is ” Lars Gert Lose”, who is from Tonder, Denmark, about an hour drive from Loose, Germany. So, how do we spell our family name, anyway? Much like our family is Canadian/American, our Ancestors were Danish /German.

I cannot locate an origin other than a generic “Germany” from the ships manifest from Rotterdam. In  1905, Schleswig Holstein was certainly Germany and under oppression by the Kaiser. An interesting blast from the past is an article I found here-

It lays down some very interesting facts about Slesvig-Holstein, specifically reconciling the Danish-German question. 

As for the LDS records, all evidence points to a resounding “negative” when it comes to the country of origin recorded in the church records. One of the hardest things I have had to reconcile is the LDS family records dating back to Carl August Loose, placing him in Pomerania at the time. It doesn’t make sense. The Loose family is a Hollander name that settled southern Denmark in the 1700’s.        

There are thousands of Danish Church records, including ones of Franz Reinhold and Carl Augusts that place the family there during this time period. The town of “Loose” is located north of Eckernforde, in modern day Schleswig-Holstein, not modern day Poland. I think the LDS records are pencil whipped, careless and taken for granted. 

Words mean things, and in this case, the records wrote words that were convenient to a middle aged lady doing her church duties at the ward in Cardston Alberta, but have caused myself a significant amount of thought and time in researching why the LDS records do no not reconcile with other historic databases. 

I hope somebody reads this. I’ll probably write and illustrate a family book for my kids explaining how we got got to where we are now, which will be cool.
